Yam is a starchy tuber that grows below the soil. It is similar to potatoes but much larger in size. It can be eaten boiled, fried, pounded into a dough-like consistency (pounded yam) and eaten with a variety of soups, or made into a porridge.

African yams are rich in carbohydrates, vitamins A, B6,  and C, thiamine, fibre, potassium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and copper.
